Steam boilers are rated by Horsepower (HP) and some times it is referred to as BHP (Boiler Horsepower) which is the same as HP. Many get confused when it comes to understanding steam boiler HP and think it is the same as the electrical motor HP where in fact is not.
Steam boiler Horsepower is an indication of how many Lb/h of steam a boiler can generate. So how much is 1 HP?
Each 1 HP is equal to 34.5 Lb/h steam. So for instance if we have a steam boiler with a size of 100HP, this means that this boiler can generate 3,450 Lb/h of steam.
In Asia and Europe another unit of measure is used which is Tons. For example a boiler that is rated at 3 Tons means that it can generate 3,000 Kg/h of steam which is equal to 6,613 Lb/h which means it is around 191 HP.
